Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A simple, safe look at your lower intestine.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a short, gentle test that allows your doctor to directly view the rectum and lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon) using a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light.
It helps detect causes of bowel symptoms quickly and often prevents the need for a full colonoscopy.
Why it’s done?
Your doctor may recommend sigmoidoscopy to:
- Find the cause of rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhoea, constipation, or mucus discharge.
- Screen for polyps, inflammation, or early cancer of the large intestine.
- Monitor known conditions such as ulcerative colitis or proctitis.
Benefits:
- Quick & comfortable: Usually takes 10–15 minutes.
- Minimally invasive: Often done without sedation.
- Diagnostic & therapeutic: Biopsies or small polyps can be removed during the same procedure.
- Early detection: Helps prevent colon cancer through timely treatment.
Preparation & After-care:
- Before: A simple enema or mild laxative clears the bowel. Avoid solid food for a few hours before the test.
- During: You lie on your side while the doctor gently inserts the flexible scope. Air is introduced for better visibility, which may cause mild bloating.
- After: You can eat normally and return to work the same day. Passing gas for a short time is common.
Serious complications are extremely rare.
