H Pylori Infection
H. pylori is a type of bacteria that can cause long-lasting infection in the stomach. More than half of the Indian population is affected by this infection.
Most people with H. pylori do not show any symptoms. However, in some individuals, it can lead to serious problems such as:
- Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum
- Gastric lymphoma
- Stomach (gastric) cancer
Diagnosis:
- An upper GI endoscopy is performed
- A biopsy from the stomach’s antrum is taken for a Rapid Urease Test
Treatment:
Treatment usually includes a proton pump inhibitor (to reduce acid) along with antibiotics such as amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, or tinidazole.
